A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar. The term literally means “maidens of Karyai”.
Karyai, an ancient town of Peloponnesus, had a famous temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, where she rejoiced with “those Karyatides” who were drugged and drunken by alcohol consumption, ecstatic round-dances.
At this time Poseidon was in a horrible mood because the Greek forgot him in their wild celebrations. So he sent them an earthquake disaster to remind them of the fact that humans need a god.
